Q: What art classes have you taken? Which one has been your favorite so far?
A: I have taken Art I, Art II, Art III, Ceramics, and Painting. My favorite class I took was Art II.
Q: Why did you decide to take Art I? Why have you continued to take additional art classes?
A: I decided to take Art I because I wanted to be able to draw better and I enjoyed taking the Art classes in middle school. I have always enjoyed art and taken classes as a way to get better and as a way to help me relax and calm down, art has always helped me to be less stressed about my school work and other things.
Q: What is your favorite medium to use?
A: My favorite medium to use is probably chalk pastels because of how satisfying it is to blend them and acrylic is really forgiving if you make a mistake.
Q: Which artwork that you’ve made are you most proud of? Why?
A: The piece I’m most proud of is a chalk pastel portrait of my late Grandpa, which I ended up giving to my grandma after I finished it. I’m most proud of it because it helped me work through losing him, knowing I could work through seeing him come to life through my hard work.
Q: Do you plan on continuing to make art after you graduate high school?
A: Once I graduate I hope to continue art in some way, whether that be for myself, others, or in classes. Sometimes it can be difficult to find the time to create something as detailed as I want outside of school but I hope that I’ll create time for myself to be able to relax and paint or draw.
Q: When did you first take an interest in art? Why?
A: I first took an interest in art because of my mom, when I was younger we would spend time drawing or coloring together. I remember one day when it was just the two of us and I decided I wanted her to draw Pluto; Mickey Mouse’s dog from a book we had rented from the library, and to this day I still have that drawing taped to the wall in my room.
Q: What advice do you have for students that are considering taking an art class?
A: I would say the most important thing to remember when taking an art class is you won’t get better unless you put some effort into every piece you do. Pushing through even when you are completely bored with the project and completing it in the best ability that you can will make you proud of your art. Also, art isn’t always supposed to be realistic, there are so many different types of art you can create if you only try.
