Q: What art classes have you taken? Which one has been your favorite?
A: I have taken Art 1, Art 2, Art 3, Drawing, Painting, Cultural Crafts, and I am taking Art Seminar right now. My favorite class so far has been Art Seminar because it is more student-led rather than teacher-led projects.
Q: When did you begin to be interested in art? Why?
A: My freshman year was when I really started to become interested in art because it gave me something to do within quarantine and while our classes were online.
Q: What is your favorite medium to use? Why?
A: My favorite medium to use so far has been acrylic paint because paint is fairly forgiving. You can easily cover mistakes with whatever color your canvas is. It is also easier to blend and make colors using paint.
Q: What tips do you have for people who are interested in getting more involved in the arts program?
A: If you want to join the art program, my only tips are to just do it. Don’t think about it, just join the class. I did it to fill in empty periods in my schedule and now I love the classes.
Q: What are your plans for after high school? Do you plan to continue making art?
A: I plan to go to Iowa State University for Art and Design to become a secondary art teacher. I want to make art while in college for classes, fun, and money.
Q: Who are your favorite artists?
A: My favorite artists are Van Gogh, Georgia O’Keeffe, Johannes Vermeer, and Michelangelo.
Q: What are some challenges you’ve faced when creating art? How have you overcome them?
A: My biggest challenge has been finding the motivation to actually do art because sometimes I can find myself in an art slump. I get over it by giving myself time to find inspiration instead of cranking out subpar art pieces.
Q: Which art project that you’ve made are you the most proud of? Why?
A: The art project that makes me the proudest is the chalk pastel deer skull I did in drawing because I put it into the Des Moines Art Festival and had more than one stranger find me on Facebook just to ask if I’d be willing to sell it to them.
