October Teacher of the Month: Kristin Behrens

Q: Where did you attend college?
A: Drake University.
Q: What classes do you teach?
A: Advanced English I, AP Literature, Yearbook.
Q: How long have you been teaching?
A: 12 years.
Q: What’s your favorite class to teach?
A: I like each class for all different reasons.
Q: What do you like about teaching?
A: I love interacting with people and having conversations, and I feel like English is conducive to that while learning the perspectives of others.
Q: Why did you decide to become an English teacher?
A: I always loved reading and writing, and I grew up playing school, so I thought it was natural that education was a place that I felt comfortable.
Q: What do you like about Southeast Polk?
A: I love that Southeast Polk has a community feel, my high school didn’t have the same feel.
Q: What is your favorite book and why?
A: I don’t think I could pick a favorite because I have many for different reasons, but I really love The Glass Castle because I’ve thought about it a lot and it opened my eyes to different perspectives.
Q: What is your favorite thing about working with students?
A: I love hearing unique perspectives, getting to know what students are passionate about, and having meaningful conversations.
