When most kids wake up on Christmas morning, they immediately run to the christmas tree, and check how many presents they have. They shake each box, putting their ears up to listen for any distinguishable sound. Every kid is dreaming of the presents that could be, between trains and dolls, to video games and a Red Ryder BB gun. Some parents however, don’t have the money to buy kids presents, for a multitude of reasons. Multiple charity events have been created in an effort to make sure every kid has a present on Christmas morning.
One such event is The Salvation Army’s Walmart Angel Tree Campaign. Families can apply to be Angels. Once the child is accepted to be an Angel, people wanting to donate can go into a Walmart store, and pick a tag off of one of the trees. They then shop for the child based on the tag they receive, and give those to the Salvation Army to distribute. According to the Salvation Army, the program gives new toys and clothes to over one million kids a year. Shopping on the Walmart website is also an option for people who can’t shop in person.
Similarly, USPS hosts an event called Operation Santa. Starting in September, kids can send letters to Santa. This continues until November 3rd, during which people can create a verified account, and be ready to receive letters. From November 17th-December 6th, adopters can receive a family of letters, and buy gifts and send them in by December 13th, so they are shipped to recipients by December 25th.
Each of these programs require very minimal effort from donors, and make a huge difference. Even donating in a small way could make someone’s holiday memorable. If you have time or money to give this holiday season, then you could even be someone’s Santa.
