On August 19th, 2025, the U.S. military deployed three guided missile destroyers to Venezuela as a part of President Trump’s goal to stop and block illegal drugs and stop drug cartels. Since that day, there have been 20-21 strikes, exclusively on Venezuelan boats that have been labeled as potential threats. This caused tensions to rise between the U.S. and the Venezuelan governments. Over the past couple of months, relationships have gotten worse and have gotten so bad that President Trump has blamed President Maduro for the migrants. The horrifying fact is that there could be a potential war outbreak in the next couple of months.
Recently, on January 3rd, 2026, after months of tensions between the two countries, President Trump announced that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro had been arrested and captured on charges of narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine importation conspiracy, and weapons offenses. This has sparked global controversy with concerns of the U.S. taking over countries and governments as it pleases. According to an article from USA Today, China has condemned the action, with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stating, “The sovereignty and security of all countries should be fully protected under international law.”

While some countries are taking their time adjusting to the situation and evaluating it, England appears to be trying its best not to seem to be on one side of the story.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a statement, “I want to establish the facts first. I want to speak to President Trump. I want to speak to allies, I always say and believe we should all uphold international law.”
According to an article written by CNBC on Tuesday, January 6th, European leaders gathered in Paris to discuss the events of January 3rd, the ongoing war with Ukraine, and how much involvement they will have in both issues.
President Maduro pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him on January 6th when he appeared in court. Though this is most likely the beginning of a very long trial and process. Many across the country and the world are protesting the arrest of President Maduro.
Over the next couple of months, we will see what happens with the trial, with many intrigued to see what would happen if Maduro is indeed convicted and the aftermath that will come with it.
